Highlights from the Acid Mine Drainage Treatment Presentation
Date: 11/09/2005
On Tuesday, November 08, the Chapter held a joint meeting with the Allegheny Land Trust (ALT) to hear a presentation regarding the activities and mission of ALT and a presentation by Dr. Bob Hedin, President of Hedin Environmental, regarding Acid Mine Drainage Treatment Technologies. The meeting was held at the Regional Learning Alliance at Cranberry Woods and was attended by 15 people.
Roy Kraynak, Executive Director of ALT, provided their presentation. ALT is a land trust organization the seeks to acquire and/or otherwise protect (through the use of easements) naturally bio-diverse and other environmentally-significant undeveloped lands so that people can continue to enjoy these natural areas freely for years to come. Roy’s presentation included numerous slides depicting lands acquired and preserved by ALT.
One of the properties acquired by ALT includes the Wingfield Pines site, which is located along Chartiers Creek in Allegheny County. On the property is a significant acid mine drainage outfall, which currently flows untreated into the creek. ALT has contracted wth Hedin Environmental to develop a passive AMD treatment system which will prevent the creek from being negatively impacted by the AMD. At present, ALT is awaiting a pending grant approval from the state to commence construction of the treatment system.
The main presentation regarding AMD treatments systems was provided by Robert S Hedin, Ph.D., President, Hedin Environmental, Inc. and Iron Oxide Recovery, Inc.
Bob is involved in the design of passive systems and in the recovery of saleable iron oxide sludge from treatment systems and he provided an excellent presentation about the science, methodologies, and latest advances in the AMD treatment the latest advances in this field. Bob's presentation was concluded with several slides depicting the conceptual design of the Wingfield Pines treatment system and a discussion regarding the technical considerations involved in developing a system for this specific site.
